And now for something quite different! Join us for a rare concert performance of songs of Kurt Weill.

Sung brilliantly by Monica Arnó, with Charles Prince at the piano and Evelyn Estava, violin, these songs create a special fabric of Expressionism. They span years of societal commentary, starting with Vienna in the interwar period when life was rife with political unrest, spies, incipient fascism competing with communism, and the rise of totalitarian regimes. The portrayals of unrest continues in songs composed in New York and Hollywood in a newly embraced ‘American’ style – a new land in post-war years, fraught with new social challenges and angst of a different sort.

These songs were written for Lotte Lenya, an innovative stage performer and singer, who was twice-married to Kurt Weill (the first marriage was interrupted by a divorce). Despite a tempestuous relationship, Lenya was deeply devoted to his music and sang all his songs. Weill and Lenya were in the vanguard of leading Expressionist (and post-Expressionist) art; their collaborative and social circles included Bertold Brecht, Max Ernst, Elia Kazan, and Ira Gershwin.

Monica and Charles have performed this programme in Vienna, and we are thrilled to have them now share it with us. Songs include Mack the Knife, Song of Mandelay, Lost in the Stars, and Foolish Heart. This is indeed a special opportunity!

This concert performance is the third of three daily consecutive events 5-7 May 2022 of the Expressionism (cont’d) comprising film, visual art, and music.
